Mary Rice is a “striking” (Operawire) mezzo-soprano known for their “elegant interpretation” and “polished vocalism” (BroadwayWorld), establishing themselves as a dynamic interpreter of opera, concert, and musical theatre repertoire. They have appeared across the U.S. and Europe, including performances at Carnegie Hall (New York), Teatro Argentina and Conciliazione (Rome), and Alte Münze (Berlin).

Recent credits include Arias and Barcarolles by Leonard Bernstein in collaboration with Jamie Bernstein (Moab Music Festival), Alto Soloist in All-Night Vigil (Fort Greene Orchestra), and Title Role in Mrs. President by Victoria Bond (Marshall Opera). World premieres include If Our Survival with Sing for Solidarity. Operatic roles include Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel, Prince Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus, Emperor Nero in L’incoronazione di Poppea, and Queen of Hearts in the U.S. premiere of The Garden of Alice.

Concert work includes Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Mozart’s Requiem, and Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. They have performed with the New York Philharmonic, Brooklyn Chamber Orchestra, Opera Fayetteville, City Lyric Opera, Canterbury Choral Society, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, and New York City Opera, among others.

In musical theatre and drama, they’ve been seen as Hot Box Dancer in Guys and Dolls, Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Macduff in Macbeth. Additional highlights include performances in Wall-to-Wall Stephen Schwartz and the Hal Prince Lifetime Achievement Gala (Symphony Space). They are the recipient of the 2023 Stagetime Arts Career Development Grant.

Mary has taught voice since 2014 and is known for applying classical “Golden Age” vocal technique to all styles. Their students perform on national tours, cruise lines, and at venues including Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space, and Studio 54.
