John–Michael is an Obie Award-winning actor who made his Broadway debut as Thought 5 in A Strange Loop (Broadway), winner of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for Best Musical. He went on to originate the role of JJ in The Heart of Rock & Roll (Broadway).
Off-Broadway, he appeared in 1776 (New York City Center Encores), This Ain’t No Disco (Atlantic Theater Company), Big River (City Center Encores), Brooklynite (Vineyard Theatre), and Jasper in Deadland (Prospect Theater Company). At Barrow Street Theatre (New York), he performed in The Flick and starred as Tobias in Sweeney Todd. The New York Times praised his “hauntingly simple performance” as Courier in 1776 (New York City Center Encores).
Regionally, he has played Evan/Dominic in Nobody Loves You (ACT, San Diego), Dickon in The Secret Garden (Center Theatre Group, Los Angeles), originated the role of Toby in Bliss (The 5th Avenue Theatre, Seattle), and starred in The Art of Falling (Second City/Hubbard Street Dance, Chicago). He also appeared in Choir Boy (Guthrie Theater, Minneapolis), where he was described as a “fleet and winning phenom on stage.”
His television appearances include The Other Two (HBO Max), Chicago P.D. (NBC), and NCIS: New Orleans (CBS). His film debut was in Blind (Vertical Entertainment, 2017) opposite Alec Baldwin. A Vivace Award-winning composer and librettist, John–Michael also contributed additional music to We’re Gonna Die (Second Stage Theater, New York).
